Before you arrive

  • Passport & Visa: U.S. citizens can enter South Korea visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months.

  • K-ETA: As of 2025, most U.S. tourists need to apply for a Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) before boarding. Apply here.

  • Currency: The local currency is the Korean Won (KRW). Currency exchange is available at the airport.

  • SIM Cards/Wi-Fi: You can rent a portable Wi-Fi device or buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport after arrival. Look for booths in the arrivals hall.

Extra Tips for U.S. travelers

  • Power Outlets: South Korea uses 220V, 60Hz, with Type C and F plugs. Bring a universal adapter.

  • Jet Lag: Seoul is 13–16 hours ahead of U.S. time zones. Plan for rest after arrival.

  • Emergency: Dial 1330 for tourist information or 119 for emergencies.

  • Flight Destination is Incheon airport, ICN. *Low Cost airline available from selected cities. https://www.airpremia.com/

  • Google map does not work well. Download Naver or Kakao Map Android Apple, Kakao Metro Android Apple, and Kakao Taxi Android Apple.

  • Recommended Public Transportation card is TMoney. You can easily get it at the airport, or you can add it as a transit card in Apple Wallet.

Getting to Seoul, bukchon area from the airport

Step 1: Arrival at Incheon International Airport (ICN)

  • Immigration: Follow signs for “Arrivals/Immigration.” Have your passport, K-ETA, and return ticket ready.

  • Baggage Claim: Collect your luggage and proceed through customs.

  • Language: Most airport staff speak English. Signs are in English and Korean.

Step 2: Choose Your Transportation to Seoul

Option 1: AREX Train + Subway

  1. Find the AREX Station: Follow signs to the Airport Railroad (AREX) in the Transportation Center (B1).

  2. Buy a T-money Card: Purchase at convenience stores (GS25, 7-Eleven, CU) or vending machines.

  3. Board the AREX All-Stop Train: Take the train to Seoul Station (about 60 minutes).

  4. Transfer to Subway Line 1: At Seoul Station, transfer to Line 1 (Blue) for one stop to Jongno 3(sam)-ga.

  5. Transfer to Line 3: At Jongno 3(sam)-ga, transfer to Line 3 (Orange) for one stop to Anguk Station.

  6. Walk to Bukchon: Exit Anguk Station (Exit 2) and walk north for about 5 minutes.

       Payment: Use your T-money card for all train and subway rides. You can top up at any station or convenience store.

Option 2: Airport Limousine Bus

  1. Buy a Ticket: Go to the bus ticket counter in the arrivals hall. Ask for Limousine Bus #6011 (Anguk Station/Bukchon).

  2. Find the Bus Stop: Follow signs outside to the #6011 stop.

  3. Ride to Anguk Station: The ride takes 70–90 minutes depending on traffic.

  4. Walk to Bukchon: From Anguk Station, walk north for about 5 minutes.

      Payment: Pay at the counter (cash or credit card) or with T-money card on the bus. Vending machine only take credit cards issued in Korea. Use counter or T-money.

Option 3: Taxi

  1. Go to the Taxi Stand: Follow signs outside arrivals.

  2. Choose a Taxi: Regular, deluxe, or jumbo taxis are available. Deluxe/jumbo are more expensive but larger.

  3. Show Your Destination: Print or show “Bukchon Hanok Village” in Korean: 북촌한옥마을 (or Anguk Station: 안국역).

  4. Ride to Bukchon: The trip takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.

       Payment: Most taxis accept cash (KRW) and credit cards. Tipping is not required.

Step 3: Upon Arrival in Bukchon

  • Navigation: Use Google Maps or Naver Maps (download before arrival; Naver is more accurate in Korea).

  • Cash: Some small shops and restaurants in Bukchon are cash-only. ATMs are widely available.
